What the knowledge test covers
The DMV knowledge test uses multiple-choice questions based on the California Driver’s Handbook. Study traffic laws, signs and markings, right-of-way, turns, parking, freeway driving, sharing the road, impairment and safe responses to hazards.
Our first set samples these topics; it does not cover every handbook rule or reproduce the official test. Read the complete handbook as part of your preparation.
Two ways to work through Test 1
Practice Mode
No time limit. Select an answer to see an explanation and a link to the relevant official handbook section. You can revise answers while learning; your result uses your final selections.
Timed/Test Mode
Work independently for up to 40 minutes, then review explanations with your results. The timer continues if you leave or reload. Unanswered questions count as incorrect.
40 questions and 40 minutes are PrepTestLab settings. They are not a statement of the official DMV test’s length or time allowance.
Understand your score
Our practice passing target is 80%: 32 of 40 correct. The DMV’s learner-permit information currently states an 80% knowledge-test passing score. Matching that percentage does not make our test or results official, or predict a real test pass.

Retakes use the same 40 questions. One latest attempt is saved in this browser for this test version. Starting a new attempt replaces it; it does not change your GED progress.

Question facts were checked against the DMV’s online handbook on September 27, 2026. Questions and explanations were written originally for PrepTestLab; official sample questions and artwork were not copied. This is a source check, not an independent driving-instructor review.
